Over 4,000 civilians exit E. Ghouta on Thursday, total number may reach 13,000 by end of day - Gen. Zolotukhin

EASTERN GHOUTA (Syria). March 15 (Interfax) - More than 4,000 civilians were evacuated from Eastern Ghouta during the Thursday humanitarian pause, Maj. Gen. Vladimir Zolotukhin of the center for reconciliation of opposing sides in Syria told the press.

"As agreed, Russia's reconciliation center is assisting in the evacuation of civilians from the towns of Hamuriah, Saqba, and Hazzah south of Douma via the humanitarian passage that opened on March 15. Over 4,000 people have left Hamuriah. The evacuation continues. At least 13,000 people are expected to exit [the area] by the end of the day," Zolotukhin said.

The Syrian authorities have opened shelters for all civilians to provide assistance, hot food, water, and medical aid.

Besides, the center has assisted in the arrival of 25 humanitarian trucks in Douma on Thursday.

"Some 137 tonnes of foodstuffs, baby food, and medicines have been supplied to the population," Zolotukhin said.
