Duma delegation to travel to Syria, meet with Assad, may visit de-escalation areas - Slutsky

MOSCOW. March 15 (Interfax) - A Russian State Duma delegation will travel to Syria soon as an element of parliamentary diplomacy, Duma Foreign Affairs Committee head Leonid Slutsky said.

"This will be a momentous trip; we intend to meet with President Bashar al-Assad, and I cannot rule out that our counterparts from foreign parliaments might take part in the trip," Slutsky told Interfax on Thursday.

The delegation might visit the de-escalation areas and territories from which terrorist groups have already been driven away, Slutsky said. "Members of the Syrian parliament will be together with us. We are maintaining permanent contact with them now," he said.

Slutsky did not give the exact dates of the visit, saying that they have yet to be finalized.
