MOSCOW. April 6 (Interfax) - The foundations of Russia's border policies need updating, Russian President Vladimir Putin said.
"The current foundations of the border policies were adopted in 1996 and it is obvious that they need serious updating, bearing in mind the current situation in the world and the increased capabilities of Russia and the huge work that has already been done," he said at an expanded meeting of the Russian Security Council.
The president said Russia's plans in the sphere of border protection "should be well thought-out and effective and they should be in line with current and prospective challenges and national development tasks."
The Kremlin earlier said the Friday Security Council meeting was expected to address a draft version of the foundations of Russian border policies and measures to boost national security in the sphere of border protection.
