U.S. fails to notify Russia about naval group passing close to Tartus base in violation of int'l practice - Shamanov (Part 2)

MOSCOW. April 10 (Interfax) - The United States failed to notify Russia that its naval group would pass within 150 miles of Russia's Tartus base, State Duma Defense Committee Chairman Vladimir Shamanov said at a State Duma meeting on Tuesday.

"A U.S. naval group appeared in the Tartus area, at a distance of 150 miles. International practice requires that parties potentially involved in events in this area provide notification in advance. We were not notified, although we lawfully ratified the treaty on our two bases, in Tartus and Hmeimim," Shamanov said.

"What's more, President Trump has said he'll think about it, and they may deliver a strike within 36 hours, irrespective of whether the UN Security Council passes resolutions or not. The situation seems to go beyond universally recognized norms," Shamanov said.
