Provision of lethal weapons to Ukraine acts as deterrent for Russia - Poroshenko

KYIV. April 12 (Interfax) - Assistance from European countries, the United States and Canada in the form of providing defensive lethal weapons to Ukraine serves as a deterrent for Russia, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said, adding that such aid should be increased.

"We have not even received weapons yet, but Russian tankmen refuse to deploy their tanks after hearing that we may have these weapons and that allegedly these lethal weapons save the lives of Ukrainian servicemen... It is extremely important. Your [international partners'] assistance serves as a powerful deterrent for Russia. I am convinced that it should be broadened," Poroshenko said at the opening of the Eleventh Security Forum in Kyiv on Thursday.
