Poroshenko hopes worst-case scenario can be avoided in Syria

KYIV. April 12 (Interfax) - Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has said he hopes the worst-case scenario in Syria can be avoided and that all of those behind crimes against humanity in that country are held accountable.

"Of course, we cannot ignore the dramatic events surrounding Syria in our discussion," Poroshenko said at the 11th Kyiv Security Forum on Thursday.

"We all hope that the worst-case scenario can be avoided. But at the same time, we understand that the civilized world's patience is not infinite, and all those who are behind crimes against humanity in this long-suffering country must be held accountable," he said.

Poroshenko accused Russia of violating commonly recognized principles of international relations and democratic values.

"It instigates, directs, and governs a sort of international dictators club," Poroshenko said. "It is now time to treat this as serious crime that requires a resolute, sweeping, and well-coordinated response," he said.

The effect of the sanctions imposed on Russia can be maximized if the European Union and the United States synchronize their introduction, he said.

"In order to change Russia's behavior, we must ensure the maximum effect from the sanctions. This is possible if the EU follows the U.S.' example and the entire world synchronizes its sanctions with it, especially in the financial sector," Poroshenko said.

He said he had instructed the government and the National Security and Defense Council to prepare certain restrictive measures against Russia.
