Armenian acting prime minister urges defense ministry, law enforcers to exercise maximum vigilance

YEREVAN. April 23 (Interfax) - Armenia's Acting Prime Minister Karen Karapetyan has instructed the defense minister and all military personnel to exercise maximum vigilance.

"I am asking the minister of defense and all our military to be extremely vigilant. Law enforcement authorities, please show maximum vigilance and continue to provide law and order. The current political situation should by no means affect the ordinary course of [civilian] life," Karapetyan said an emergency government meeting on Monday.

He also urged all citizens and political forces to stay vigilant, abide by the law, and respect each other's rights.

"Tomorrow, April 24 [the day of commemorating victims of the Armenian genocide], is an extremely important day for all of us. And I am calling on all political forces to depoliticize tomorrow's day so we could pay our tribute with honor. We must show the whole world that we can in times of crisis unite, get together, hold dialogue and find logical solutions," Karapetyan said.

All citizens are expecting their government to work smoothly, he said.

"There should be no disruptions in this work. And this should be the most important matriculation test of our statehood. I am confident that we will fulfill this obligation with honor," Karapetyan said.

Earlier on Monday Prime Minister Serzh Sargsyan resigned after days of street protests. He was elected to this post by parliament on April 17.
