No alternative to six-nation talks on denuclearization of Korean Peninsula - Russian Foreign Ministry

MOSCOW. April 28 (Interfax) - Russia believes there is no alternative to the six-nation format (Russia, China, Japan, the United States, and two Koreas) of further negotiations on settling the situation on the Korean Peninsula, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov told Interfax on Saturday.

"To our mind, the six-nation process is not just the optimal but also the only institutional 'framework' of such negotiations [multilateral talks on the entire range of regional problems, including the nuclear one], and there is no alternative to it," Morgulov said.

"Therefore, Russia will be assisting in the Korean settlement process by both interacting with partners in bilateral formats and taking an active part in the collective efforts," he said.

He thus responded to the question about the role Russia could play in fostering positive trends on the Korean Peninsula and the topicality of the six-nation format of the Korean settlement.
