Fire breaks out at Balakliya artillery depot burnt in 2017, servicemen evacuated

KYIV. May 3 (Interfax) - Dry grass has caught fire at the former artillery depot operated by military unit A1352 near Balakliya in the Kharkiv region while servicemen were scrapping dud shells, the press service of the Ukrainian General Staff said in a statement.

"At 1:35 p.m. today, on May 3, dry grass caught fire on the former premises of the 65th depot in Balakliya in the Kharkiv region, which was being cleaned up and cleared of dud munitions that did not explode during last year's emergency," the staff said on Facebook.

Two firefighting tanks and an obstacle-clearing vehicle are containing the fire. "Mine action personnel have been evacuated," the staff said.

Servicemen and rescuers of the Ukrainian State Emergency Service are providing security for the local population.

The staff did not provide details of the fire scale and possible casualties.

Munitions started to explode at the 65th depot near Balakliya on March 23, 2017. The explosions killed a woman and injured three people.
