Washington proposes idea of introducing Arab forces to Syria to share responsibility for its illegal actions there, financial burden - Lavrov

MOSCOW. May 14 (Interfax) - The foreign ministers of Russia and Egypt have discussed Washington's idea of a possible introduction of joint Arab forces into Syria whose ultimate goal is to share responsibility for its illegal actions in that country, Russia's Acting Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.

"As my counterpart said, we have discussed this topic in the context of the discussion of the situation in Syria, in the context of the discussion of the actions of the so-called external players including the U.S, because it is them who proposed the idea of inviting Arab countries to send their troops to Syria," Lavrov said after talks with Sameh Shoukry in Moscow on Monday.

"As far as I understand, the aim of this proposal is to share the responsibility for direct gross violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Syrian Arab Republic which did not invite the U.S. and other members of its coalition onto its territory. The second aim is to share the financial burden, of which everyone in Washington keeps talking about. I think everyone understands what is behind this proposal," Lavrov said.
