Lavrov: Hopefully, U.S. pullout of Iran deal doesn't mean it plans to attack Tehran

MOSCOW. May 21 (Interfax) - Moscow hopes that the United States' pullout of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on the Iranian nuclear program does not imply that there are plans to attack Tehran or change the regime there, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.

"It is hard to predict now how the events could develop. We would like to hope that the U.S. pullout of the agreement does not imply plans to attack Tehran or change the regime there. Nevertheless, it is obvious already now that this decision causes serious damage to global and regional security and stability," Lavrov said in an interview with the Argentine newspaper Clarin.

Moscow is "disappointed by U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to unilaterally withdraw from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action for settling the situation surrounding the Iranian nuclear program and to reinstate the anti-Iranian sanctions," he said.

"This step significantly violates both the JCPOA and 2015 UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which endorsed it. Contrary to the opinions of most countries in the world, Washington is again acting exclusively in its own narrowly selfish interests, grossly trampling upon international law," he said.
