Estonian president warns Europe not to get used to Donbas war

TALLINN. May 22 (Interfax) - Estonian President Kersti Kaljulaid said that war is going on in the eastern part of Ukraine, which the Western world should not perceive as something inevitable.

"Our countries have a lot in common in their history. The situation in Ukraine today is difficult, and we fully support [Ukraine]. We have to call things by their true names: war is being waged in the eastern part of the country, and Crimea is occupied by Russia," Kaljulaid said following a meeting with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko in Kyiv on Tuesday.

"This is a burden that prevents Ukraine from developing at the pace at which this country is actually capable of developing," she said.

"The Western world should not get accustomed to the war and occupation or perceive them as something inevitable. It is important to make sure that the Minsk Agreements are implemented and that the rest of the countries remain united in terms of sanctions against Russia," Kaljulaid said.

She mentioned the pension and healthcare reforms Ukraine has been carrying out.

"The principles of the rule of law and the protection of investment are matters that cannot be disregarded when following the European path, and the leaders of Ukraine are perfectly aware of this," Kaljulaid said.

"Estonia consistently supports Ukraine in its efforts toward Euro-Atlantic integration," she said.
