Abkhazia, Syria establish diplomatic relations (Part 2)

MOSCOW. May 29 (Interfax) - Abkhazia and Syria announced on Tuesday that they have recognized each other and are establishing diplomatic relations at the level of embassies, Abkhaz President Raul Khadjimba said in a statement shared with Interfax.

This step "reflects their mutual aspiration to develop relations in all areas," Khadjimba said in the statement.

"This event was preceded by extensive work accomplished by the Foreign Ministry of the Republic of Abkhazia, Abkhazia's embassy to Moscow, and other agencies of the Republic of Abkhazia. Abkhaz and Syrian officials exchanged visits. Close contacts were established," he said.

The ambassadors of Abkhazia, Syria, and South Ossetia to Russia agreed on the text of this communique and the date of its release and exchanged relevant notes at a trilateral meeting on May 28.
