CIS Executive Committee chair urges joint deterrence of color-revolution exports

KYZYL (Tuva). June 6 (Interfax-AVN) - The Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) should create new joint mechanisms for deterring attempts at exporting "color revolutions" and other destabilizing factors, CIS Executive Committee Chairman Sergei Lebedev said at a meeting of the CIS Council of Defense Ministers on Wednesday.

"There is no one to suggest efficient security recipes for our countries. We are responsible for maintaining stability on our land and should create joint mechanisms for deterring destabilizing factors. No doubt, our keynote task is to resist the attempts at destroying our long-standing bonds and to ensure the optimal combination of common interests and national interests of every state of ours," Lebedev said.

He gave examples of the ongoing erosion of a fundamental principle of international relations: non-interference in affairs of sovereign states.

"In some cases, it comes to armed interference. For example, armed units of a number of foreign states are involved in the hostilities in Syria in violation of the UN Charter and without the consent of the lawful national government. Of course, this undermines the entire system of international relations. These actions continue exports of 'color revolutions'. To our deep regret, our enemies are trying to apply the same strategy to CIS countries," Lebedev said.

Such traditional international security institutions as the United Nations and the OSCE have been unable to efficiently counter those threats, he said.

"Modern threats and challenges cannot be neutralized on the national level. Obviously, there is need for coordinated and joined efforts and the maximum use of integration capacities for ensuring peace and strengthening security of CIS member states," Lebedev said.
