Karabakh special service chief resigns following PM, police chief

YEREVAN. June 6 (Interfax) - Arshavir Gharamyan, the director of the national security service of the self-proclaimed Nagorno-Karabakh republic, has resigned, Nagorno-Karabakh State Minister (Prime Minister) Arayik Harutyunyan said.

Harutyunyan himself had announced his resignation earlier on Wednesday.

"Head of the national security service Arshavir Gharamyan also tendered his resignation today. I also want to say that the reports on his possible appointment as state minister are untrue. A different decision will be made," Harutyunyan said at a press conference.

Stepanakert has seen protests over the past several days, whose participants demanded that the Nagorno-Karabakh national security service and police chiefs be fired.

The protests followed a fight between ordinary citizens and national security service officers on June 1.

Nagorno-Karabakh leader Bako Sahakyan met with the protesters. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and former Armenian President Levon Ter-Petrosyan called for ending the protests.

Harutyunyan and police chief Kamo Aghajanyan tendered their resignation on Wednesday.
