Russia backs Minsk's Helsinki 2 initiative - ambassador

MINSK. June 8 (Interfax) - Russia supports a Belarusian initiative to launch a worldwide dialogue on security similar to the Helsinki Process.

"We support the Belarusian leadership's initiative to defuse the situation and create conditions for a serious dialogue on the problem of security and stability. This also concerns the Helsinki 2 initiative," Russian Ambassador to Belarus Alexander Surikov said at a press conference in Minsk on Friday.

Given the worsening international situation, the growth of the military threat in the region and the buildup of NATO's military contingent on the CIS border, "Minsk's opinion that stirring up military hysteria may entail serious military and political complications is valuable," he said.

"The most important thing, of course, is for all potential participants in this discussion to agree in general on the fundamental issues of the global agenda during the preparatory stage," Surikov said.
