Idea of 'peace-enforcement' operation in Donbas contradicts Minsk Agreements - Russian Foreign Ministry (Part 2)

MOSCOW. June 9 (Interfax) - Moscow has rejected the United States' and Europe's offer of a United Nations operation "to enforce peace" in Donbas.

"As for the UN contingent in Donbas, as is known, Russia introduced the relevant draft resolution at the UN Security Council in September 2017. However, we have not yet received written amendments to this document," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a commentary on Saturday prior to the Normandy Four foreign ministers' meeting in Berlin on June 11.

"Instead, our European and U.S. partners promote the ideas of a military operation 'to enforce peace' and establish the international military-civilian administration in the region until local elections take place there. Donetsk and Luhansk reject such offers, which contradict the Minsk Agreements," the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

"Any formats of international assistance to the settlement of the internal Ukrainian crisis, including under the UN auspices, must be based on approval of the parties to the conflict, Kyiv and Donbas," it said.
