MOSCOW. June 18 (Interfax) - The chairman of the Russian presidential council for human rights, Mikhail Fedotov, has received a written request from Ukraine's parliamentary commissioner for human rights Liudmyla Denisova asking him to arrange for medical treatment of the convicted Ukrainian Oleksandr Kolchenko, the Council stated on its website
"The ombudsman [Denisova] thanked the head of the human rights council for the information with regard to Oleh Sentsov and asked for necessary measures to be taken to protect Kolchenko's rights and assist with providing the Ukrainian man with necessary medical assistance," the statement said.
Kolchenko, who is serving his sentence at a penal colony in the Chelyabinsk region, required medical attention when his condition worsened after going on a hunger strike, the letter on behalf of the Ukrainian ombudsman stated.
Ukraine is hoping for further assistance with protection of human rights and liberties.
"The Human Rights Council and the Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada's human rights commissioner Denisova have established a dialogue that allows one to hope for progress in the cause of protecting the rights of imprisoned Russians and Ukrainians," the Council said.
