Moldovan govt's appeal to UN regarding Russian troops' withdrawal escalates tensions - President Dodon

CHISINAU. June 19 (Interfax) - Moldovan President Igor Dodon has made a special statement on Tuesday to condemn the government's draft of a UN General Assembly resolution on the withdrawal of Russian troops from Moldova.

The special statement was published on the presidential website.

"Shortly before the parliamentary election, the Moldovan government put forward an initiative concerning Russian troops' withdrawal from Moldova at the United Nations," Dodon said.

"I should say yet again that the discussion of this issue in the defiant tone of the incumbent government will only worsen the position of Chisinau and impede the soonest political settlement of the Transdniestrian conflict," Dodon said.

He underscored "the paramount importance of the peacekeeping operation in the Dniester area as a guarantee of peace and security of the civilian population."

"This is an essential element of the confidence building program and the agreements reached in the 5+2 format over the past two years. Those agreements revived the political agenda of the negotiations," Dodon said.

"Days of the incumbent parliamentary majority and the government formed by the Democratic Party are numbered; most Moldovan citizens do not trust them," he said.

"This is why several domestic officials and their foreign sponsors have launched an unsavory PR campaign using the UN platform with the sole purpose of exacerbating the situation in Moldova and causing serious damage to Moldovan-Russian relations. I am sure that an issue of such magnitude as the pullout of the Russian military contingent and the withdrawal (disposal) of weapons and ammunition should be discussed with the legitimate parliament and government of Moldova to be formed in the coming months, after the parliamentary election," Dodon said.

Moldovan Foreign Affairs and European Integration Minister Tudor Ulianovschi said last week that the UN General Assembly would hear a draft resolution on the complete and unconditional withdrawal of foreign military forces from Moldova on June 22.
