Palestine-Israel crisis settlement should be based only on 2 states' principle - UN sec gen (Part 2)

MOSCOW. June 21 (Interfax) - The Palestinian-Israeli crisis needs to be settled on the principle of two states; there cannot be other options, United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres said.

At the Valdai Discussion Club meeting on Thursday, Guterres said that he has been concerned about the current situation between Palestine and Israel, noting he believes a decision based precisely on two states will be made.

He expressed confidence that a two-state solution should be sought. At the same time, he said that he has been profoundly convinced that there cannot be a Plan B.

However, the scenario of current developments causes Guterres to be profoundly concerned. The UN's capacity is limited in this issue, he said.

Opinions are different on this issue in the UN Security Council and the recent votes did not make it possible to reach an agreement, he said.

It is necessary to take every effort to arrive at a decision based on the principle of two states that the Israelis and the Palestinians would live with mutual respect, and honor each other's security, he said. Any attempts to move in another direction will create a dramatic confrontation, the UN secretary general added.
