France interested in nuclear waste disposal in Arctic - ambassador

MURMANSK. July 17 (Interfax-AVN) - France highly appreciates its experience of bilateral cooperation with Russia in nuclear security and is interested in the disposal of spent nuclear fuel in facilities in the Murmansk region, French Ambassador in Russia Sylvie Bermann said during a visit to Murmansk on Tuesday.

"France and Russia are two large nuclear powers and, naturally, it is very important for us that the rehabilitation and deactivation of military equipment that still remains in the region take place," Bermann told reporters prior to a meeting with Murmansk region deputy governor Roman Duryagin.

The agenda of the visit includes a visit to the first floating nuclear plant, the Akademik Lomonosov, and the nuclear-powered icebreaker Yamal at the Atomflot Federal State Unitary Enterprise in Murmansk. The delegation will also learn about the removal of spent nuclear waste from Gremikha, a former Soviet submarine base.
