Putin, Xi praise effective security cooperation of BRICS countries

JOHANNESBURG. July 26 (Interfax) - The BRICS member states cooperate effectively on security matters, Russian President Vladimir Putin said.

"The BRICS countries fight the most serious challenges and threats to peace and stability together. They cooperate in combating terrorism, extremism, illegal drug trafficking, and transborder crime," Putin said at a BRICS summit in Johannesburg.

Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed.

"Security cooperation is an important component of partnership within BRICS. We should adhere to multilateral approaches and the fundamental goals and principles of the UN. We should take advantage of meetings between national security advisors, foreign ministers, and representatives of our countries at the UN so that our voice is heard when new decisions are developed," he said.

The BRICS countries "could jointly form a new type of international relations based on mutual respect, equality, and mutually beneficial cooperation," Xi said.
