FSIN ready to take part in discussions on Matviyenko's prison reform ideas

MOSCOW. July 27 (Interfax) - Russian Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN) Director Gennady Korniyenko said he is ready to participate in discussions of Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matviyenko's proposals on reforming the service, though he said this problem demands a comprehensive approach.

"We need to take a look at how we can put this into practice. It is easy to say that it should be done this way - maybe it is right. But it is necessary to examine this problem from all angles first before making a decision," Korniyenko told reporters on Friday.

"We are ready to take part in this process," he said.

Matviyenko told journalists on Thursday that Russia's prison system needs to be reformed.

On July 20, Novaya Gazeta published a video in which 18 prison workers in Yaroslavl tortured a handcuffed inmate, identified as Yevgeny Makarov. The incident occurred on June 29, 2017. The report caused a public outcry. Six people have been arrested. The investigation is being conducted by the main directorate of the Investigative Committee.
