Tbilisi says Georgian citizen detained in S. Ossetia on border violation charges

TBILISI. July 31 (Interfax) - Georgia has informed the European Union Monitoring Mission in Georgia (EUMM) of the detention of one of its citizens in South Ossetia.

Vasil Salamashvili, a resident of the village of Sakorintlo in the Kaspi municipality, was detained on border violation charges, the Georgian State Security Service told journalists on Tuesday.

The EUMM has been informed of the incident, and the mission's hotline has been engaged for negotiations on Salamashvili's release, the service said.

Tbilisi does not recognize the border with South Ossetia, and the Georgian authorities consider the detention of people on border violation charges unlawful.
