Putin backs idea of mandatory equipment of aircraft with GLONASS system (Part 2)

NOVO-OGARYOVO, Moscow region. Aug 8 (Interfax) - Russian President Vladimir Putin has voiced support for Roscosmos head Dmitry Rogozin's proposal on the mandatory equipment of aircraft operated by Russian airlines with the GLONASS space-based satellite navigation system.

At a conference hosted by Putin on Wednesday, Rogozin said that since the beginning of 2018, all cars sold in Russia have been equipped with the ERA-GLONASS system, which helps track the cars' positions and, if necessary, dispatch aid teams. "This is about hundreds of lives saved," he said.

"We propose that an analogous practice be introduced when Russian airlines acquire foreign-built aircraft, even on lease terms, all the more for those manufactured in Russia. They must be equipped the same way, with GLONASS, or in some instances, GLONASS-GPS modules," Rogozin said.

"We propose that this be done legislatively," he said.

"This would provide the crews with more accurate navigation," Rogozin said.

"I'm for it," Putin said. "Please work this out with the government according to the established procedure," he said.

Rogozin said also that the airports in Russia are equipped with the GLONASS system, while the planes themselves, most of which are foreign made, do not yet have such modules. "I've prepared a report and will submit it to you," he said.
