Ships of Russian Navy arrive in Mediterranean

MOSCOW. Aug 13 (Interfax-AVN) - A group of Russia's Northern Fleet ships comprising the missile cruiser Marshal Ustinov and the destroyer Severomorsk have passed through the Strait of Gibraltar bottleneck and arrived in the Mediterranean Sea, the fleet said in a press release on Saturday.

"The crews continued scheduled training during the voyage. In the Atlantic, the crew of the missile carrier Marshal Ustinov practiced air defense and checked the preparedness to use weapons and technical means. For its part, the crew of the destroyer Severomorsk had an anti-submarine practice involving a Kamov Ka-27 anti-sub helicopter," the fleet said.

"The Northern Fleet's ships passed through the strait, which is only 14 kilometers wide in its narrowest part, in the dark and amid intensive navigation," the fleet said.

The warships have covered a distance of over 6,000 nautical miles since July 5 when they departed from Severomorsk, the main base of the Northern Fleet, it said.
