Russian sailors hold anti-sub drills in Sea of Japan

MOSCOW. Aug 13 (Interfax-AVN) - The Admiral Panteleyev destroyer and the Sovershenny corvette have drilled searching for and attacking submarines in the Sea of Japan, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

"A Pacific Fleet search-and-attack squadron consisting of the Admiral Panteleyev large anti-submarine ship and the Sovershenny corvette held an anti-submarine exercise in the Sea of Japan," the ministry said.

The target, a diesel submarine of the Maritime Combined-Arms Flotilla, was pursued with air support from the Kamov Ka-27PL anti-submarine helicopter.

"On being found, the submarine was fired at with practice torpedoes," the ministry said.

The ships also held a series of joint exercises in at-sea damage control, aiding a distressed ship, and rescuing at sea.
