Lavrov briefs UN sec gen on contacts between Russian, Ukrainian ombudsmen

MOSCOW. Aug 13 (Interfax) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has briefed UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on the contacts between Russian Human Rights Commissioner Tatyana Moskalkova and her Ukrainian counterpart Liudmyla Denysova, the Foreign Ministry said.

"At his request the secretary general was informed of the situation surrounding the contacts between the Russian and Ukrainian human rights commissioners," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement published on its website following the phone call.

The foreign minister and the secretary general also discussed Syria. "The interlocutors exchanged opinions on the issues on the UN agenda with a focus on the problems of Syrian settlement. They shared the opinion that progress in settling crises directly depends on the UN member states' readiness to take collective efforts based on international law, goals and principles of the UN Charter," the statement said.

Lavrov and Guterres had a phone call on Monday.
