Victory Volunteers activist gets suspended sentence in Ukraine - Russian ombudsman Moskalkova

MOSCOW. Aug 17 (Interfax) - A Ukrainian court has given a suspended prison sentence to Victory Volunteers activist Yelena Odnovol, who will leave the detention facility on Friday, Russian human rights commissioner Tatyana Moskalkova said.

"I have just spoken to [Ukrainian ombudsman] Liudmyla Denisova by phone. She told me that Yelena Odnovol has received a three-year suspended prison sentence. She will be released from the remand facility tomorrow [on August 17]," Moskalkova was quoted by her press service as saying.

It remains unclear at this point where Odnovol will serve her suspended term, she said.

"Her mother will come tomorrow to the detention facility in Kherson where she [Odnovol] is still being held. According to Denisova, Odnovol has made a confession. However, I have not yet been informed of the essence of these crimes. Denisova has promised to send [a copy of] the conviction as soon as she receives it from the court," Moskalkova said.

The Victory Volunteers movement's press service reported on April 23 that the movement's activist, Russian citizen Odnovol, had been detained in Ukraine. The Ukrainian authorities claim that she is a Ukrainian citizen. The Kherson City Court arrested Odnovol on high treason charges.
