Format of Surkov-Volker talks on Donbas may be changed - source

MOSCOW. Aug 21 (Interfax) - The format of negotiations between Russian presidential aide Vladislav Surkov and U.S. Department of State Special Representative for Ukraine Negotiations Kurt Volker has played its role and is currently irrelevant, a source familiar with the negotiations told Interfax.

"This negotiating format has helped resolve a set of disagreements on a peaceful settlement of the conflict in Donbas. Most importantly, it has enabled Moscow and Washington not only to timely compare notes but also understand how each party sees this conflict and what considerations it is guided by. However, the format has given all it could and exhausted itself now," he said.

No meetings between Surkov and Volker are planned in a foreseeable future, he said.

"It's being discussed how reasonable it is to preserve the format as such. The format might possibly be modified or replaced by another format," the source said.
