KUBINKA, Moscow region. Aug 24 (Interfax) - Pakistan and Russia are going to sign a contract for an upgrade of T-80 tanks the former purchased from Ukraine, Brigadier General Anwar Noman, deputy chief of Pakistan's state military-industrial corporation Heavy Industries Taxila, told reporters on Friday.
"We bought T-80 tanks from Ukraine, which we would like to upgrade into an advanced condition. Because it was a Soviet battle tank, Russia has every capability for its upgrade. We reckon that the talks will be over in a few months' time and we'll able to exchange specialists who will come to Pakistan and help us modernize the armor," Noman said at the Army-2018 forum.
He did not say how many tanks are to be upgraded and for how much.
T-80 is the main battle tank which was made in the Soviet towns of Omsk and Kharkov.
The tank is being upgraded by the Russian corporation Uralvagonzavod.
In October 2017 the Russian government signed an intergovernmental agreement with Pakistan to supply weapons and military hardware and repair and upgrade military products. The agreement also allowed the parties to jointly develop new types of weapon and provide advice.
