Chiefs of Russian, Chinese general staffs discuss military cooperation

MOSCOW. Aug 27 (Interfax) - Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces Gen. of the Army Valery Gerasimov and Chief of the Joint Staff Department of the Chinese Central Military Commission Col. Gen. Li Zuocheng have met in Moscow to discuss boosting military cooperation.

"Today I propose discussing the prospects of stepping up and expanding our bilateral ties, including the holding of joint military drills, and exchanging opinions on the situation in volatile regions in the world," Gerasimov said, welcoming Li Zuocheng.

Li is on his first foreign visit to Russia as the chief of the Joint Staff Department, which shows the special nature of Russian-Chinese "comprehensive partnership and strategic interaction," Gerasimov said.

Thanks to the efforts of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping, the two countries have reached a new level in relations and became a tangible factor in the provision of peace and international security, Gerasimov said.

"We are focusing on the implementation of the agreements that have been reached. The key component of military cooperation is interaction between the two countries' general staffs," he said.
