Russia halts adoption of UN experts' report on N. Korea sanctions - Nebenzya

NEW YORK (UN). Aug 31 (Interfax) - Russia has halted the adoption by the United Nations Security Council of an expert report on compliance with sanctions imposed on North Korea, Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya told reporters.

Russia decided to block the report at a recent UNSC closed-door meeting because "Russia disagrees with some provisions of this report," he said.

Nebenzya, however, declined to say exactly which details of the report Russia objects to, saying that the document remains confidential until it is officially published.

The United Kingdom's Permanent Representative to the UN Karen Pierce, who is currently the UN Security Council's president, said that unofficial consultations heeding Russia's objections would be held with the council's members on Friday, and hopefully the document would be adopted.

Nebenzya also said that Russia has requested an investigation into confidential information leaks from the UN Security Council Sanctions Committee on North Korea to the media, adding that both Russia and the delegations of some other UN member countries are concerned by it.

"Some countries have turned out to be quite reluctant" to tackle this issue, and Russia will conduct such an investigation on its own, Nebenzya said.
