Russian air defense troops redeploy from Abkhazia for S-400 missile drill

MOSCOW. Sept 10 (Interfax-AVN) - The Russian air defense personnel stationed in Abkhazia destroyed "hostile" air targets during a live fire exercise at the Kapustin Yar in Astrakhan region, the Southern Military District stated on Friday.

The troops "carried out launches with the S-400 'Triumf' [system]," the statement said.

Also, operators of the Osa-AKM air defense missile system struck at mock targets simulating a hostile air raid, flying at around 300 meters per second on an altitude of up to 3,000 meters and a distance up to 7,000 meters, the statement said.

Missiles were fired both from equipped positions and from a moving column during brief stops, against missile-targets enabling a simulation of a real combat environment, imitating manned and unmanned aerial vehicles at various altitudes, as well as tactical airborne and anti-aircraft missiles. In all, the air defense crews performed around 40 firing missions, the statement said.

The drill involved around 1,000 troops, over 200 weapons and air defense systems, including Strela and Igla.

Meanwhile, neighboring Georgia is hosting the international military exercise Agile Spirit 2018, organized with the U.S. Marine Corps Forces Europe. This exercise will end on September 11.
