Russia ready to help lift UNSC sanctions against Eritrea amid normalization of Eritrea's relations with Ethiopia, Somalia - ambassador

MOSCOW. Sept 14 (Interfax) - Moscow is ready to assist in the lifting of UN Security Council sanctions against Eritrea, Russian Ambassador to Eritrea Azim Yarakhmedov told Interfax.

"Given the rapid normalization of Eritrea's relations with Ethiopia and Somalia, as well as a similar process launched in the relations with Djibouti, there are no grounds to prolong the UN Security Council sanctions imposed on Asmara in 2009," Yarakhmedov said.

"The situation in the region that once caused the imposition of UN Security Council sanctions on Asmara has been changing swiftly and drastically," he said.

"Hence, Russia, which is a permanent member of the UN Security Council, is ready to assist in lifting the restrictions in collaboration with other African partners at the Security Council, among them Ethiopia, and other like-minded countries," Yarakhmedov said.

"The lifting of those sanctions will broaden the range of areas in Russian-Eritrean cooperation," he said.
