Vostok 2018 participants kill "saboteurs" in Chukotka not far from Alyaska

MOSCOW. Sept 14 (Interfax) - Troops from the Arctic motorized-infantry brigade of the Russian Northern Fleet' practiced anti-sabotage operations during the Vostok 2018 maneuvers, the defense ministry said on Friday.

Chukotka borders the United States by sea.

"The units of the Northern Fleet motorized-infantry brigade taking part in the Vostok 2018 maneuvers marched across Chukotka peninsula, from the Arctic Ocean shore to the Pacific coast, in army-issue vehicles designed to operate under Far North conditions," the ministry's information department said.

The over 270-kilometer, cross-terrain march in DT-10P two-tier track vehicles from Cape Vankarem to the Egvekinot village continued for two days, the military said.

"During the march, Northern Fleet troops practiced raid tactics to search for and eliminate mock enemy groups of spy-saboteurs. At certain stages of the march, live fire drills were carried out with small arms and large-caliber machineguns against position targets," the department said.

The Northern Fleet troops are taking part in the Vostok's northeast location as part of an Arctic grouping.

Earlier the Defense Ministry said that a group of Northern Fleet warships and support vessels had held a search and rescue exercise in the Bering Sea.

The Vostok 2018 maneuvers, which began on Tuesday, involve around 300,000 Russian troops from the Eastern and Central Military Districts, the Pacific and Northern Fleets, Airborne Troops, and strategic and military transport aviation, the defense ministry said.
