SCO foreign ministers to discuss Azerbaijan's bid for observer status - secretary general

BAKU. Sept 17 (Interfax) - The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) will consider Azerbaijan's bid for observer status at a meeting of the SCO foreign ministers, SCO Secretary General Rashid Alimov said at a meeting with Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov.

"Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov met with SCO Secretary General Rashid Alimov during a working visit to China. They discussed prospects for the development of cooperation at the meeting," the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said on Monday.

Mammadyarov underscored Azerbaijan's interest in broader cooperation with the SCO and in bringing this cooperation "to a qualitatively new level" up to observer status, it said.

"Alimov stressed for his part that the SCO discussed Azerbaijan's bid for observer status in August. This matter will be discussed at a meeting of the Council of the Foreign Ministers of the organization's member states," the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said.

Azerbaijan completed its accession to the SCO as a dialogue partner in June 2016.
