Moscow court extends arrest of Kudryavtsev, scientist charged with treason, by 3 months

MOSCOW. Sept 17 (Interfax) - Moscow's Lefortovsky District Court has extended the arrest of Central Research Institute of Machine-Building (TsNIIMash) employee Viktor Kudryavtsev, 74, who has been charged with high treason, until December 20, an Interfax correspondent reported.

"The court has ruled to extend defendant Kudryavtsev's arrest until December 20, 2018," Judge Yelena Kaneva read from the ruling on Monday.

The court session was held behind closed doors, as the case files are classified.

According to the indictment, his lawyers said, the scientist passed "some" secret data using an "unknown" email address from the town of Korolyov to the von Karman Institute in Brussels, which had a cooperation program with TsNIImash in 2011-2013.

Kudryavtsev has denied any wrongdoing. His lawyers said he had not had access to classified information for over 20 years.

His arrest was reported on July 22, and members of Moscow's Public Monitoring Commission found him at the Lefortovo detention facility. According to human rights activists, Kudryavtsev was brought there on July 20. He is the oldest inmate in the jail.
