Iskander missile destroys command-and-control center in drill near Astrakhan

NOVOSIBIRSK. Sept 17 (Interfax) - Operators of the Iskander-M ballistic missile system from a missile brigade of the 41st Combined-Arms Army of the Central Military District destroyed a command-and-control center of a simulated enemy during an exercise on the Kapustin Yar training ground in the Astrakhan region, the district's press service said on Monday.

A reconnaissance team detected the "hostile" command center from more than 200 kilometers away.

The target's coordinates were passed on to the Iskander-M operators, who successfully fired the missile and destroyed the structure.

"Analysis of the objective monitoring data showed a 100% hit. In addition, the crews tested their skills in changing firing positions, disguising the ballistic missile system, and removing missiles from transporter erector loaders," the statement said.

The exercise involved over 500 troops and over 50 pieces of hardware.

The Iskander-M, designed by Mashinostroyeniya, a subsidiary of the High Precision Systems Holding, is capable of hitting targets at a distance of up to 500 kilometers. It can be equipped with either ballistic or cruise missiles. The system is designed to destroy multiple rocket launchers, anti-missile and air defense systems, planes and helicopters at airfields, command posts, and infrastructure.
