Korean Peninsula problem cannot be settled through sanctions - Nebenzya

MOSCOW. Sept 17 (Interfax) - The Korean Peninsula's nuclear problem cannot be resolved using only sanctions and pressure on North Korea, Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya said at a UN Security Council meeting in New York on Monday.

"The restrictive measures introduced by UN Security Council resolutions with respect to North Korea cannot be an end itself. They should be an instrument for engaging this country in constructive talks," Nebenzya said.

"It is impossible to settle the nuclear problem of the Korean Peninsula using only sanctions and pressure on Pyongyang. Sanctions cannot replace diplomacy," he said.
