Khabarovsk military court gives 3.5-year sentence to ISIL recruiter

KHABAROVSK. Oct 1 (Interfax) - The Far Eastern District Military Court has sentenced a recruiter of the ISIL international terrorist organization (banned in Russia) to three and a half years in a general-security penitentiary.

The recruiter was convicted of aiding and abetting terrorism, the press service of the Federal Security Service's branch in the Eastern Military District said in a statement on Monday.

The court established that the recruiter adhered to a radicalized religious ideology and maintained close contacts with international terrorist fighters using his mobile phone.

The man received a special theological training in 2015, returned to Khabarovsk, and started recruiting youngers for illegal armed units.

Over recent years, the man was recruiting servicemen of the Khabarovsk garrison and even prepared one of them for joining ISIL's ranks in Syria.

The Federal Security Service (FSB) detained the man in Moscow in March 2018 and took him to Khabarovsk for a trial.

The FSB found religious books, including books on the federal list of extremist materials, and portable communication systems at the man's residence. The defendant pleaded guilty as charged and regretted his actions, which softened his sentence, the statement said.

The sentence took effect.
