U.S. withdrawal from friendship treaty with Iran opportunistic decision made in favor of narrow groups - Ryabkov

MOSCOW. Oct 4 (Interfax) - The United States' withdrawal from the friendship and cooperation agreement with Iran is a narrow, opportunistic decision, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said.

"We understand that these decisions were made solely in relation to the well-known verdict of an international court. The U.S. demonstrated yet again that such a move, which runs counter to its own idea of what is right and what is wrong, any deviation from such ideas should be rejected. It causes very tough resistance in Washington," Ryabkov told reporters on Thursday.

"The American law school is very strong, of course. Of course, they work quickly when they need to. What makes me sad and bitter is a realization that this might of the U.S. legal apparatus often services purely opportunistic, narrow, spur-of-the-moment political interests, as was in the case of the instant withdrawal from agreement with Iran and subsequent pronouncements regarding the relevant protocol to the Vienna convention," Ryabkov said.
