Matviyenko sure Russia to promote Korean reunion if Pyongyang, Seoul decide so (Part 2)

SEOUL. Oct 5 (Interfax) - Russia will promote the reunification of two Koreas if Seoul and Pyongyang decide to reunite, Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matviyenko told the press in Seoul on Friday after meeting with South Korean President Moon Jae-in.

"It is up to the two sovereign states, the DPRK and the Republic of Korea, to decide whether to reunite or not, and when. If they decide to do so, Russia will definitely support it and provide the necessary support," Matviyenko said.

"It's a matter of time," she said.

Certain regional and non-regional actors do not want to see a reunified Korea, Matviyenko said.

"I think there will be a lot of impediments if they make this decision. I hope they continue to meet each other halfway," she said.

Both Koreas see reunion as a highly sensitive subject, Matviyenko said.

"The division line separated one people with a common culture, language, and centuries-old history, not to mention family bonds and divided families. Of course, we are glad that the inter-Korean dialogue, which will create an atmosphere of trust, has begun," she said.
