BRUSSELS. Oct 19 (Interfax) - The ASEM countries generally intend to support the use of political and diplomatic methods to settle the situation on the Korean Peninsula, a source in the Russian delegation at the ASEM summit in Brussels said.
"The Korean issue is one of the central ones, it will be discussed by the leaders," the source told reporters on Friday.
The settlement process has begun, the source said. "We need to support diplomatic efforts and not play around in the direction of toughening the sanctions," the source said, commenting on the discussion of the final document of the forum.
"Everyone wants it to continue. It will be the main message of the Korean discussions," the source said.
The leaders of the ASEM countries will discuss the provisions of the document and are expected to confirm that they agree with them at the forum in Brussels.
The provision dealing with the situation on the Korean Peninsula may not satisfy every participant in every respect, the source said.
The final statement of the ASEM chair is being finalized by the leaders of the delegations and will express the general message of the discussion, the source said. However, the nuances of the participants' positons may differ, the source said.
The final edition of the statement allows "some freedom for the presiding side," the source said.
