New Western Military District troops commander appointed

MOSCOW. Nov 12 (Interfax-AVN) - Col. Gen. Alexander Zhuravlyov has been appointed the commander of the troops of the Western Military District, district spokesman Col. Igor Muginov said on Saturday.

Zhuravlyov was born in 1965 in the village of Golyshmanovo, Tyumen region, he said. He graduated from the Chelyabinsk Tank Command College in 1986, from the Military Academy of Armored Corps in 1996 and from the General Staff's Military Academy in 2008.

He held various ranks and was appointed the deputy commander of the Central Military District Troops in December 2013.

He held the post of the chief of staff and the first deputy commander of the Southern Military District Troops since May 2015. Zhuravlyov commanded the task force of the Russian Armed Forces in Syria.

Zhuravlyov was appointed deputy chief of the General Staff. He has commanded the Eastern Military District troops since November 2017.

Troops of the Western Military District are deployed to 26 constituent entities in central and northwestern Russia. The district's military composition is two combined-arms armies, one tank army, an air defense unit, the Baltic Fleet, forces, military units and comprehensive support organizations. The district's headquarters is in St. Petersburg.
