MOSCOW. Nov 16 (Interfax-AVN) - The Russian Northern Fleet will receive its first set of Arctic short-range Tor-M2DT rocket systems next week, the Defense Ministry said.
"In accordance with the state defense contracts, the manufacturer will supply the systems to the territory of Training Center 726 of the Air Defense Forces in the city of Yeisk in the Krasnodar Territory," the ministry said.
It had been reported that the military would receive a regimental set of the Arctic Tor system in the near future.
The Tor-M2DT is an Arctic version of the Tor-M2. It is installed on two-link DT-30 crawler transporters.
The Tor was first shown to the general public at the Victory Parade in Moscow on May 9, 2017.
"These systems have unique terrain-crossing capacity. They can drive over holes and swim, and they can work at -50 degrees Celsius. The unit comprises 16 air defense vertical launch missiles, which have a range of up to 12 kilometers and an altitude range of up to 10,000 meters," the ministry said.
The Tor-M2DT is capable of firing at four air targets attacking from different directions simultaneously. It is an all-weather rocket system intended for air and missile defense at a range of up to 15 kilometers and at an altitude of up to 10,000 kilometers. It was put into operation in the troops air defense (Ground Forces) in 2015.
Northern Fleet Commander Nikolai Yevmenov said earlier that the combat capabilities of forces deployed in the Arctic would be increasing.
In September, the Russian military reported the deployment of a Bastion coastal missile system on Kotelny Island in the Arctic
