Kremlin expects statement from new Georgian president on bilateral relations - Peskov (Part 2)

MOSCOW. Nov 29 (Interfax) - The Kremlin has noted the outcome of the presidential election in Georgia and is expecting the winner to make a statement regarding the future of relations between Georgia and Russia, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

"Of course, we have been following the news reports coming from Georgia. We're taking the information into consideration, the fact of the candidate's victory," Peskov told journalists on Thursday.

Asked whether Salome Zourabichvili's win inspires optimism in Moscow, he said, "We prefer to wait for the first statements and assessments of the possible prospects of the development of relations between Russia and Georgia."

While "the two nations remain very close to each other, interstate relations leave much to be desired following the well-known events," he said.

With all votes counted, the Georgian Central Elections Commission has declared Salome Zourabichvili, an independent candidate supported by the ruling party Georgian Dream, the winner.
