Russian, Pakistani ships drill countering piracy in Arabian Sea

MOSCOW. Nov 30 (Interfax-AVN) - The destroyer Severomorsk and the sea tug Kama are taking part in the active phase of the Russian-Pakistani Arabian Monsoon drills to practice counterpiracy actions, the press service of Russia's Northern Fleet said on Friday.

"During the drills, which are underway in the northern part of the Arabian Sea, joint actions of the forces of the Russian Northern Fleet and the Pakistani Navy for suppressing the activity of pirate groups and other criminal groups at sea will be practiced," the Northern Fleet said.

The Pakistani Navy is represented by the frigate Saif, the missile boat Kuwat, the patrol boat Karar, and the helicopter Sea King.

"Fighting off attacks of high-speed boats by a group of ships and vessels in a column, tactical maneuvering, reciprocal exchange of information about the situation, and detection of suspicious ships by the crews of warships of the Russian and Pakistani Navies will be practiced in the drills," the Northern Fleet said.

One of the main episodes of the exercise will be the liberation of a ship "seized by pirates" by the personnel of an attack group of the Northern Fleet's Marines in interaction with the Pakistani Naval Special Forces. "The frigate Saif and the destroyer Severomorsk will take turns playing the role of ships seized by pirates in the drills," the fleet said.
