More Ivan Gren-type landing ships to be built - USC head

MOSCOW. Dec 3 (Interfax-AVN) - More Ivan Gren-type landing ships of Project 11711 will be built with certain modifications, United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) head Alexei Rakhmanov told the press on Monday.

"Some modifications will be made to the hulls of the new ships, which will make them more habitable. We are expecting a series of two or three landing ships to be built," Rakhmanov said.

"We will build the Pyotr Morgunov practically the same way as the Ivan Gren. At least two or three more ships will be built later on the basis of this project. We'll see what happens next. We'll discuss it with the Navy," he said.

The Ivan Gren, the lead ship of Project 11711, was delivered to the Navy in June 2018. Its keel was laid in December 2004, but construction went slowly due to the designer's mistakes and financial problems. Dockside trials began in October 2015, and sea trials followed in June 2016. The sea trials were suspended in fall 2016 because of problems with the ship's degaussing system.

The Ivan Gren arrived in Severomorsk, the Northern Fleet's main base, in October of this year.

The Yantar Shipyard is building the Pyotr Morgunov for the Defense Ministry. All problems uncovered during tests of the Ivan Gren are being taken into account.
