Shamanov urges looking into report of secret UK cyber unit in Ukraine

MOSCOW. Dec 3 (Interfax) - The report that the British army's 77th Brigade is running a secret operations unit in Ukraine should be looked into, according to Vladimir Shamanov, the chairman of the State Duma Defense Committee.

"This information needs verification because, essentially, this could lead to the violation of provisions of international conventions regarding influencing people with the aid of technical means," Shamanov said on Monday, responding to a question from Interfax.

"If such things happen, this requires a separate international assessment. This information should be taken very responsibly. I do not possess such information yet," Shamanov said.

He said he will make relevant inquiries.

On Sunday, the BBC's Russian service reported that several military groups from a secret cyber unit of the British army (the 77th Brigade) were in Ukraine. The brigade consists of 1,200 members whose role involves carrying out military tasks on the Internet, psychological influence, and information operations, according to the report.
